If you are a home or business owner in Oakland, and would like to have a tree (or trees) planted in front of your property, here’s what you’ll need to do:
Thanks to a grant administered by CAL FIRE, “disadvantaged communities” qualify for FREE trees
- Use this map to see if you qualify for our grant
- View Larger Map, then click the magnifying glass search icon and enter your address to see whether your location falls within our grant boundary - shown in green
- If you are in our "free-tree" zone but are able and willing to pay anyway, we'll put your donation toward others who don't qualify for our grant.
- Trees must not be under high-voltage electrical wires
- If the high-voltage electrical wires are on your side of the street, you can choose to:
- Buy and plant a shorter stature tree yourself by following the steps on the no-cost Tree Planting Permit, and submitting it to the City of Oakland Public Works office
- Explore getting a free tree for your front yard instead. You will also have to complete and sign a Memorandum of Understanding as this will be on your private property
- Try other tree-planting organizations in Oakland that may have the capacity to help you: Sierra Club Tree Team or Urban Releaf
- If the high-voltage electrical wires are on your side of the street, you can choose to:
ONEGo to our "Request A Tree!" page to fill out our Tree Request Form (TRF), or download a PDF and send it to us.
